Counseling

School Counselors

School counselors at Athens Renaissance design and implement comprehensive counseling programs that support students in three essential areas: academic, personal/social, and career development. These programs promote student achievement by helping students resolve emotional, social, or behavioral challenges and by guiding them toward a clearer sense of direction.

Comprehensive in scope, preventive in design, and developmental in nature, the school counseling program at Athens Renaissance follows both the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) National Model: A Framework for School Counseling Programs and the Comprehensive Counseling and Guidance State Model for Alabama Public Schools.

Certified school counselors, in collaboration with teachers, administrators, students, and parents, deliver the program at each grade level. Athens Renaissance is proud to support its students through the four core components of school counseling: guidance curriculum, individual planning, responsive services, and system support.

Curriculum
This component includes classroom and large-group activities for students in all grades. Topics focus on decision-making, self-awareness, study skills, and career exploration and planning.

Individual Planning
Every student has opportunities to plan, monitor, and manage their academic, career, and personal/social goals. This includes test interpretation, academic advising, and post-secondary or career/technical planning.

Responsive Services
A large part of the counselor’s day is dedicated to addressing students’ immediate needs. These services include personal counseling, problem-solving, agency referrals, and consultations with staff or families.

System Support
This component includes activities that enhance the overall counseling program, such as staff and community relations, participation on support teams and task forces, professional development, curriculum development, data analysis, and test interpretation.

A comprehensive school counseling program is a vital part of Athens Renaissance’s academic mission. Grounded in data and aligned with student standards in academic, career, and personal/social development, the program is designed to enhance the learning and growth of all students.
